Candida Yeast Overgrowth

If you have read My Story you know that I've been struggling with fatigue and brain fog for a long time (since 2001). Well that is when things really became noticeable anyway. Other symptoms were there long before. I can remember things from my childhood that only now make sense to me.

On April 16, 2014, my doctor confirmed that I have Systemic Candida Overgrowth (also known as Candidiasis). Candida albicans is a type of fungus that is normally found in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract. Yet the problem begins when an individual, such as myself, has an overgrowth of this organism to the extent that it can be detected in the blood because it has grown outside of the digestive system and starts to affect other body systems.

I just found a very good definition which explained that C. albicans (Candida) adhere to the wall of the gut/stomach lining and penetrates through into the bloodstream. It can do this because it is a fungas and actually has root-like parts which bury into the gut wall lining. Candida wreaks havoc on not only the digestive system, but eventually the whole immune system.

Many people are aware of the common symptoms of candida such as oral thrush, vaginal yeast infections and toenail fungus. But when the yeast invades deeper into the tissues of the body, one may experience brain fog (which is the main symptom that started me on my health journey), sinus congestion/hay fever, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, blood sugar imbalances, chronic constipation/diarrhea, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and the list goes on and on...

Currently (2016), to combat Candida Overgrowth, I eat food-based probiotics such as sauerkraut and use supplemental probiotics such as Garden of Life Primal Defense Ultra Ultimate Probiotics Formula. To effectively combat Candida, make sure your probiotic supplement containsSaccharomyces boulardii like the supplement mentioned above does. I also eat one clove of garlic daily, usually mixed into my salad. I also take Chromium to help regulate blood sugar. It's a mineral that many of us are missing. When I fell that I have eaten too many carbohydrates (which can feed Candida) I take additional supplements such as Pau D' Arco.

One thing to note is that your body is unique. You might need to research and try different probiotics until you find what works for you. Everyone needs some type of probiotic (it's essential to a healthy body) - but there are many different forms. Research your symptoms and look for probiotic strains in the form of supplements to help with those specific symptoms. Don't forget to include probiotic foods too.
